Hiring by Role

How to Hire Digital Marketing Talent in Kenya

Define the channel and commercial outcome, then examine portfolios, measurement skills and platform experience.

Define the marketing outcome and channel

Digital marketing covers distinct disciplines. A social-media coordinator, SEO specialist, paid-media buyer, email marketer and analytics lead solve different problems. Define the audience, funnel stage, channels, budget responsibility and commercial outcome before comparing Kenyan digital marketers.

If the role spans several channels, distinguish what the person must already lead from what they can support or learn. Avoid combining strategy, copy, design, advertising, analytics and community management into an unrealistic single role.

Review evidence behind a portfolio

Ask candidates to explain the objective, their own contribution, constraints and result of a campaign. Screenshots and attractive creative are only part of the evidence. Explore how the work was measured, what changed during the campaign and which factors were outside the candidate’s control.

Respect confidentiality. Candidates can discuss methods and sanitised outcomes without sharing a previous client’s private data, account access or proprietary plan.

Assess channel-specific capability

SEO and content

Discuss search intent, content quality, technical collaboration and measurement. Be cautious of guaranteed rankings or tactics designed only to manipulate search engines.

Paid advertising

Explore campaign structure, audience choices, creative testing, budget controls and how the candidate distinguishes platform-reported performance from business results.

Email and lifecycle marketing

Assess segmentation, messaging, testing, deliverability awareness and reporting. Clarify who owns data protection and consent decisions.

Social media

Review content planning, community handling, brand judgement and escalation during sensitive interactions. Posting volume alone is not a strategy.

Examine analytics and attribution judgement

Ask how the candidate selects useful measures and deals with incomplete attribution. Strong marketers should connect channel activity to a relevant business outcome while acknowledging uncertainty. Clarify the quality of your own tracking so candidates are not judged against data they cannot access.

Match the role to your operating stage

An early-stage business may need experimentation and broad execution, while an established team may need deep expertise in one channel and close collaboration with specialists. Explain the available budget, creative resources, technical support and approval process. A strategy cannot be evaluated separately from the environment in which it must operate.

Clarify whether the marketer owns planning, hands-on production, agency coordination or team leadership. Ask for examples at a comparable level of ownership rather than relying on campaign brand names.

Use a role-specific practical task

Provide a fictional brief and ask for a concise plan, campaign diagnosis or content outline. Evaluate prioritisation, audience understanding, measurement and clarity. For an analytics role, use sanitised sample data; for content, use a short draft rather than requesting a complete unpaid campaign.

Look for responsible marketing practice

Discuss how the candidate handles consent, customer data, platform policy, advertising claims and brand risk within their responsibilities. Employers remain responsible for obtaining appropriate legal and compliance advice. A candidate should be comfortable escalating a request that appears misleading or conflicts with an agreed policy.

For SEO, be cautious of bulk content or link tactics offered without regard to quality. For paid media, establish budget approval and account controls. For every channel, the employer should retain ownership of core accounts and business data.

Digital marketing interview questions

  • Which result from a previous campaign best demonstrates your own contribution?
  • How would you decide which channel to test first for this audience?
  • Tell us about a campaign that underperformed and what you changed.
  • Which measures would you report to a business owner, and why?
  • How do you brief or collaborate with a designer, writer or developer?
  • What platform changes or data limitations have affected your decisions?

Set responsible account access

Use individual platform access, appropriate roles and documented approval limits. Do not share primary credentials. Clarify who can publish, change budget, export customer data or connect new tools. Agree a handover process for campaigns, creative, tracking and reports.

During onboarding, begin with a contained audit or campaign area and agree the first reporting cycle. Review not only results but the assumptions, data quality and decisions behind them. This creates a common standard before the professional receives broader ownership.
